Are You Prepared for an Emergency?

This past month I realized how unprepared I was in case of an emergency. Due to all the recent fires in California, our neighborhood was told to be ready if the order to evacuate was issued. As I heard the news, it was hard to process; this was really happening. I was supposed to be packing for a trip to celebrate my daughter’s pinning ceremony to complete her nursing program. My husband, son, and I had one bag to pack the most important things that we could carry.
A surge of emotion came rushing as I was looking at our home and thinking that this might be the last time I see it. So many memories!! I quickly realized most of the material items can be replaced, but the most important thing was making sure the family was safe. I found comfort knowing that we had a financial plan in place if the house was destroyed, and our estate plan was up to date. We quickly packed all our important documents and pictures to be ready to drive and meet our daughter and celebrate her accomplishment.
We returned four days later and are so glad that our home was there waiting for us. Thanks to the fantastic firefighters and first responders who have worked so hard to contain all the area fires. My eternal gratitude for their bravery and hard work.
I still do not feel prepared and have a “Go Bag” ready, just in case.
Here is a list of items that may be essential for your “Go Bag”:*
Basic electronics; extra phone charger, portable battery pack, extra batteries, flashlight, and small hand-cranked or battery-operated AM/FM radio.
Toiletries and a first-aid kit.
Clothing for a few days. Think layers like when you go camping.
Medications for a few days.
Necessary paperwork; Copies of birth certificate, driver’s license, social security, naturalization certificates, Medicare cards, and estate planning documents.
Snacks & Water
Cash for a few days
Are you prepared with your “Go Bag” and with a financial plan? We are never in control of our life, but we can be prepared. Take steps to be ready!
*Individual circumstances and situations may warrant different items in your “Go Bag”; consider talking to your loved ones to determine what items should be in your respective bags.
